There are nearly 2,500 wineries in Australia, across 65 wine regions, with most being small family-owned operations.
But experts are predicting market forces will drive a number of wineries out of business over the next decade. Editor-in-chief of the Meininger's Wine Business International magazine, Felicity Carter, said a huge proportion of the wine industry internationally was not profitable. "There's a romance about wine and too many people get into it for the lifestyle and don't understand the economics of it," she said. "If you look at a country like France, children don't want to take over their parents' farms and vineyards because they see how hard their parents work and how hard it is to make money." "What's happening there is happening internationally, so we are going to see a contraction in the number of wineries in the next 10 years."
